Yayasan Sabah Group therefore strives to manage its forestlands in an integrated and sustainable manner, for their greatest long-term benefits to the people. Hence it will continue to adopt sound forest management practices, which are consistent with the state and national forestry development policies and legislation put in place over the years. In line with this, Yayasan Sabah Group is currently undergoing a Certification Support Programme towards the attainment of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification for two of its Forest Management Units within the concession area. Its Forestry, Processing and Marketing Division is also in the process of obtaining the MS ISO 9001:2000 certification. Yayasan Sabah Group has also started experimenting with the airborne logging system in its logging activities. The system involves the use of helicopter and skyline logging methods. These collaborations with the private sector are manifestations of the Yayasan Sabah Group's commitment in preserving the environment while undertaking its forestry activities. Its wholly-owned subsidiaries, Rakyat Berjaya Sdn Bhd and Berita Wawasan Sdn Bhd were set up to undertake commercial activities to manage the concession areas. Benta Wawasan Sdn Bhd was also established to undertake large scale fast-growing industrial tree plantations. Innovision (PNG) Ltd is also involved in timber operations in Papua New Guinea. Most of the timber harvested is exported as logs while a limited volume is processed into sawn timber. Innovision (PNG) Ltd is desirous of developing in the medium to long term, an integrated forest industry in Papua New Guinea. With the support and guidance of the local authorities, the company is embarking on a certification support program are through which it hopes to have its project certified under the FSC, as a sustainably managed forestry venture. |
